Facebook is bringing some variety to viewership on its platform.
The social networking firm is launching a new Facebook video app for TV, which will arrive on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Samsung Smart TV. The company said there are more platforms to come.
“Last year we rolled out the ability for you to stream videos from Facebook to your TV, and today’s announcement expands this capability,” reads a Facebook blog post. “With the app, you can watch videos shared by friends or Pages you follow, top live videos from around the world, and recommended videos based on your interests.”
Other options include the ability to catch up on videos you’ve saved for later viewing, as well as revisit videos you’ve watched, shared or uploaded.
That is not the only update Facebook announced to improve video on its site, however.
The latest change, which includes auto-play videos with the sound turned on by default, is about to make your News Feed a whole lot noisier.
“As people watch more video on phones, they’ve come to expect sound when the volume on their device is turned on,” the Facebook blog post reads. “After testing sound on in News Feed and hearing positive feedback, we’re slowly bringing it to more people. With this update, sound fades in and out as you scroll through videos in News Feed, bringing those videos to life.”
That does not mean you are doomed to be blasted with noise every time you scroll through your news feed, however.
If you set your phone to silent, videos will not play with sound. If you prefer to have the sound off permanently, you can head to Settings to disable it by switching off ‘Videos in News Feed Start With Sound.’
Other updates include the ability to scroll through your feed and watch a video at the same time. This is accomplished by shrinking the video you wish to view to picture-in-picture, enabling you to watch a video in the corner of your screen while browsing for other stories in your feed.
“People are watching and sharing more video on Facebook than ever, and we’re focused on continuously improving the video experience,” Facebook said.
