Twitter is launching a new set of tools to combat offensive and abusive behavior on its social networking site.

The social media firm today said the update will prevent trolls from creating new abusive accounts. It will also surface safer search results and collapse potentially abusive or low-quality tweets.

AE_TweetDetails_Final“Making Twitter a safer place is our primary focus,” the company said in a blog post. “We stand for freedom of expression and people being able to see all sides of any topic. That’s put in jeopardy when abuse and harassment stifle and silence those voices. We won’t tolerate it and we’re launching new efforts to stop it.”

The update, Twitter pointed out, builds on the tools it launched in November, which stepped up controls, reporting and enforcement.

Here’s a look at the new changes:

Halting creation of new abusive accounts:
Twitter now has technology in place to help it identify people “who have been permanently suspended and stop them from creating new accounts.” These people are suspended for varying forms of damaging behavior, particularly from creating accounts only to abuse and harass others.

Introducing safer search results:
The implementation of ‘safe search’ will remove tweets that contain potentially sensitive content as well as tweets from blocked and muted accounts from search results.

“While this type of content will be discoverable if you want to find it, it won’t clutter search results any longer,” Twitter said.

Collapsing potentially abusive or low-quality tweets:
Twitter is identifying and collapsing potentially abusive and low-quality replies to ensure only relevant conversations are front and center. The impacted tweet replies will still be accessible if you want to see them, however.

“In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to roll out product changes – some changes will be visible and some less so – and will update you on progress every step of the way. With every change, we’ll learn, iterate, and continue to move at this speed until we’ve made a significant impact that people can feel,” Twitter said. “We’re listening and want your feedback so we can learn faster, build smarter, and make meaningful progress.”
