Facebook Cracking Down on Fake Live Videos

Facebook is apparently tired of phony live videos being posted to its platform.

The social network is addressing the issue with a platform policy update that prohibits its users from uploading videos that are “static, animated, or looping images” or polls that are “associated with unmoving or ambient broadcasts.”

Video creators must also “clearly distinguish any pre-recorded content from live content.”

Facebook’s crackdown is targeting publishers or businesses that post a supposedly live video merely to get more attention. The purpose of Facebook Live is to have live content that offers value to the viewer so the social networking firm can draw in as many viewers as possible. If Live became associated with low-quality content, that could push users to other platforms, such as rival YouTube.

Facebook Live, which enables users to broadcast live before an audience, was launched more than a year ago to all mobile users and to desktop users in March.

To share a live video, a user simply taps on Update Status and then the Live Video icon. He or she can then write a short description and choose an audience to share it with before going live.

During a live broadcast users can see the number of viewers, the names of friends tuning in and a real-time stream of comments. At the end of the broadcast, it will be saved to the user’s Timeline. The user can chose to delete it immediately or keep it for friends to watch later.
