Siri-Run Apple Speaker to be Announced at June’s WWDC

Apple is about to give Amazon and Google a run for their money in the voice-activated speaker market.

The California tech firm is reportedly hard at work on building a Siri-run speaker that, much like the Amazon Echo and Google Home units, would be able to control Smart home devices, stream music, check the weather forecast and check your calendar. Mapping functions may also be available, according to a report published by Forbes that cited an industry report from KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo.

The Siri Speaker product, which Kuo refers to as ‘Apple’s first home AI product,’ may be unveiled at the company’s annual worldwide developers’ conference (WWDC) in June.

The report indicated that Apple has a more than 50 percent chance of announcing the device in June. Regardless of the exact launch date, the Smart speaker is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2017.

The device is expected to boast ‘excellent’ sound with seven tweeters and a subwoofer, making it a more sophisticated, high-quality product than the Echo— meaning it will also come at a higher price, Kuo said.

According to the Forbes report, Apple is expected to ship roughly 10 million speaker units in the first year of availability.
