Google Knows How Bad Your Spelling Is

Google really does know everything about us — even the words we have trouble spelling.

The search giant has released data on Canada’s most misspelled words with a breakdown by province. The data, Google said, was collected by tracking the words most often typed into the search engine accompanied by the search phrase “how to spell.” Google released similar data for the U.S. last week.

Google Canada head of communications and public affairs Nicole Bell told CTV News many of the problem words were ones that had letters that are easily transposed or are spelled differently in Canada than in the United States, such as ‘colour’ and ‘color.’

“So words like colour, favourite, cheque, those are always in the top words that are searched by Canadians on Google,” Bell said. “They’re the tricky words that we need a little bit of backup for.”

Some of the most common word look-ups in Canada include ‘pneumonia’ as well as ‘elliptical,’ ‘facetious’ and ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ — the iconic word from the 1964 Disney movie Mary Poppins.  The U.S. also struggled with ‘pneumonia’ and ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ as well as ‘beautiful,’ ‘tomorrow’ and ‘maintenance.’
