Apple Unveils $999 iPhone X

Apple has a new take on the iPhone.

The Cupertino company unveiled its much-anticipated iPhone X Tuesday, its newest, and most expensive, flagship Smartphone.

With a $999 price tag, the iPhone X is by far Apple’s most expensive phone but, according to CEO Tim Cook, it is also the “biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.”

The glass and stainless steel handset, which Apple has described as the “future of the Smartphone,” boasts an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch Super Retina display that offers more accurate colors and a more natural viewing experience.

The all-glass front and back phone, which comes in silver or space grey, is reinforced by a surgical-grade stainless steel band, making the device water and dust resistant.

“iPhone X is the future of the Smartphone. It is packed with incredible new technologies, like the innovative TrueDepth camera system, beautiful Super Retina display and super fast A11 Bionic chip with neural engine,” Apple senior vice-president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller said. “iPhone X enables fluid new user experiences — from unlocking your iPhone with Face ID, to playing immersive AR games, to sharing Animoji in Messages — it is the beginning of the next ten years for iPhone.”

The iPhone X offers enhanced security with Face ID, a type of technology that can accurately map and recognize a face. Face ID uses a depth-sensing front camera to unlock the device once it recognizes the owner’s face.

“Face ID only unlocks iPhone X when customers look at it and is designed to prevent spoofing by photos or masks,” Apple said in a press release. “These advanced depth-sensing technologies work together to securely unlock iPhone, enable Apple Pay, gain access to secure apps and many more new features.”

The new flagship will also be the first iPhone to not have a home button. Instead, users can open their phone by picking it up or swiping the screen.

Photo enthusiasts will appreciate the phone’s rear camera with its 12-megapixel sensor, dual-lenses. The ƒ/1.8 aperture on the wide-angle camera joins an improved ƒ/2.4 aperture on the telephoto camera offering improved photos and videos.

The TrueDepth camera also brings emoji to life with Animoji.

“Working with A11 Bionic, the TrueDepth camera captures and analyzes over 50 different facial muscle movements, then animates those expressions in a dozen different Animoji, including a panda, unicorn and robot,” Apple said. “Available as an iMessage app pre-installed on iPhone X, customers can record and send Animoji messages with their voice that can smile, frown and more.”

The new flagship Smartphone is available for pre-order Oct. 27. iPhone X, which is selling for $1,319 in Canada and $1,327 in the U.K., will not hit stores until Nov. 3.
