Google Slapped With Pay Discrimination Lawsuit

Google is under fire once again for gender discrimination and pay inequality.

A new lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accuses the tech company of paying men more than women for doing the same or similar work.

The suit was filed on behalf of three female former Google employees — Kelly Ellis, Holly Pease, and Kelli Wisuri — who left the company after being forced onto career tracks with compensation that was less than their male peers. The women’s lawyer is currently seeking class action status, in which case the suit would represent thousands of Google employees in California.

“Google has discriminated and continues to discriminate against its female employees by systematically paying them lower compensation than Google pays to male employees performing substantially similar work under similar working conditions,” the lawsuit reads.

The suit is going after both lost wages and a piece of Google’s profits.

Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano said the company is reviewing the lawsuit but, thus far, has found no basis for it.

“Job levels and promotions are determined through rigorous hiring and promotion committees, and must pass multiple levels of review, including checks to make sure there is no gender bias in these decisions,” Scigliano said in a statement to the media.

“And we have extensive systems in place to ensure that we pay fairly. But on all these topics, if we ever see individual discrepancies or problems, we work to fix them, because Google has always sought to be a great employer, for every one of our employees.”
