My oldest kid-a girl-was practically raised in a campus bar & cafe where I worked when she was little. She hung out with freaks, Goths, gay and straight people, blacks, whites, Native Americans, and some people who we never could really identify. She learned to play poker when she was three, and was beating college students by the age of four at the game. She has always been exposed to everything, and therefore finds nothing too frightening to confront.
She’s fifteen, and her idea of “fun” this summer is taking free college courses from MIT. She doesn’t wear makeup, dress like a wh*re, or chase boys (or girls, for that matter). Her idea of good music is Vienna Teng and old Black Sabbath, with a little Bach thrown in for variety. She’s astoundingly polite, curious, and completely grounded in reality.
By your logic-and the logic of those who believe that TV and music “corrupt” kids-my daughter should have had her first welfare baby by now. Instead, she’s an artist, plays violin, dresses like a cross between a Goth and a hippie, takes anthropology and animal behavior courses for “fun,” and wants to go into biology when she’s older. She doesn’t see “rank” in people-to her, everybody is equal, and equally deserving of respect until they prove otherwise.
