Taiwan's Terrifying New Special Forces Unit
Taiwanese Special Forces and a select few other military units recently received updated bulletproof armor that includes a ballistic face mask that serves to protect operators from lethal headshots and to reduce fighting effectiveness of opposing forces, seemingly by causing them to immediately curl into the fetal position and cry for their mothers. The mask can tae a hit from a .44 Magnum. What I’m wondering iswhy issue them now? What threat warrants this kind of protection specifically? Anyways, yes, they look like something out of dystopian fascist future movie. -Mort

I don’t understand the practicality of the ballistic face masks. .44 Magnum is a handgun round that generates any where from 900 to 1260 ft./lbs. of muzzle energy. Realistically, any risk assessment would identify rifle rounds as the most likely threat realized on the modern battlefield. In this case, 7.62mm x 39 mm (Chinese – Peoples Republic Army) which generates about 1500 to 1660 ft./lbs. of muzzle energy. This puts it over the mitigated (.44 Magnum) threat and soundly defeats the ballistic mask. So the mask provides no protection over the projected threat.
On the other hand, the bottom picture of the Taiwanese Death Trooper portrays him wielding what looks like a Mac 10 or Mac 11. Perhaps they are in the practice of shooting live rounds at each other. In that case the ballistic mask would soundly defeat the .45 ACP (about 400 ft./lbs. muzzle energy) or 9mm NATO (about 360 ft./lbs. muzzle energy). I am sure this would be an exhilarating experience which would reinforce the lesson of keeping ones head down behind adequate cover.
Then again, maybe the idea behind the ballistic masks are not ballistic protection. Maybe their purpose is to shock or awe the enemy. In that case I would suggest painting them with a terrible visage. Say something like a skull or demon motif. Although, I’m sure it would not be long before someone started sporting a “Hello Kitty” design thereby reducing the overall effectiveness of the whole process in the first place. Perhaps they could be better served by the application of simple camouflage paint. I’ve always been a fan of Alice Cooper face paint done in loam and woodland green.
What was my point in all of this again? Oh yeah, Aim for the junk!

UH Huh! Can take a .44 mag hit in the face can they? What do you suppose the effect of that kind of impact would be on the trooper’s neck and/or brain? It’d be worse than getting struck in the head with a baseball bat wouldn’t it? If it didn’t cause a severe neck injury, I’d expect at the least a serious concussion, and probably a TBI, woudn’t you?
