Dept of Defense Says Conservative Views ‘Extremist’

The conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch recently obtained a Department of Defense training manual that warns of folks who embrace “individual liberties” and “states’ rights” as being potential threats to the government.

Judicial Watch got hold of this manual as part of a Freedom of Information Act request. Included in the 133 pages of lesson plans and PowerPoint slides provided by the Air Force in response to the FOIA request is a January 2013 Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute “student guide” entitled “Extremism.”

This fits a larger, and increasingly troubling, picture of government agencies labeling anyone who questions of the political status quo as a terrorist. In recent years, multiple federal agencies have been counseling officers and others working with the political class that members of groups questioning the status quo are to be regarded as threats. For example, a report distributed by the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) entitled The Modern Militia Movement, dated February 20, 2009, listed supporters of 3rd party presidential candidates Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr as potential “militia” influenced terrorists. Of course, the only people being “threatened” are the members of the political class who depend on the status quo.
