IT’S A POLAR VORTEX

The Arctic is gripping the Upper Midwest and Rockies and its spreading.  Other parts of the U.S. are expecting sharp drops in temperature in the coming days from a powerful weather system that hit Alaska with hurricane-force winds over the weekend.  As much as 3 feet of snow blanketed parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with temperatures AS LOW AS 19 BELOW early Wednesday. Up to 18 inches fell in northern Wisconsin and parts of central Minnesota saw more than 16.

Missouri governor says police ready for grand jury decision

Missouri’s Governor has addressed concerns over the impending grand jury decision in the case of the shooting death of black teen Michael Brown. The Brown family said they had faith in the pending decision of a grand jury and called to refrain from violence.  Police are ready to respond to any possible outbreak of violence in or around the St. Louis suburb Ferguson, where weeks of heated protests followed the killing in August.  Mary MacCarthy reports: 

Historic comet landing attempt underway

The European Space Agency has released a probe from its Rosetta satellite to attempt a historic landing on a comet.  If successful, the probe would provide the closest look mankind has ever had at a comet.  Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin. 

Russian bomber patrols to reach Gulf of Mexico

The military says Russia’s long-range bombers will go from the Arctic Ocean to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico on regular patrol missions, in a show of muscle reflecting tensions with the West over Ukraine. A statement from Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu s statement comes as NATO has reported a spike in Russian military flights over the Black, Baltic and North seas as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

Russia agrees to build Iran nuclear reactors just before key talks

Russia’s government has agreed to build up to eight new nuclear reactors in Iran. The deal comes twelve days before the deadline of a deal aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear activity, with the effect that the Russia deal may have on the talks unclear. Tom Barton reports.
