The Right Way and the Wrong Way to ‘Attack’ Islam or Any Religion

When politics and religion cross paths, it’s inevitable for the concept of free speech to come into play from both sides of the aisle. Such was the case this weekend when a “Draw Muhammad” event that was intended to attack the Muslim faith while making a point about free speech turned deadly with gunfire and ended in two suspects getting killed.

It isn’t clear whether there was anything that was intended to promote the Judeo-Christian faiths attached to the event, but we hope that it was purely political. Even if there were no shootings, we would have been against the event for the very nature of the message itself. We are called as believers to defend the faith earnestly and to make disciples. We are not called to ridicule or insult and for good reason: it doesn’t work. Most attempts at conversion from any religion are ineffective. With our faith, there’s only one path to making disciples and that path does not include insults.

Some would say that we should not attack any religions. This is not true. The Bible calls us to spread the Gospel, to share the Good News, and to help others see that they have within themselves a compulsion to learn of our Lord and Savior and to worship our Father in Heaven. These are made clear to us, but for many it requires love and education to open someone’s eyes to the truth.

At no point is it acceptable to utilize insults, threats, or bullying. That is the way of other religions. The worship of the one true God of the Bible requires us to be firm in our faith, righteous in our examples, and loving of our neighbors. We are to pray for those who do not see the light. We are to love our enemies just as we are to love our friends. Events like the one down in Texas are counter-productive to the faith and not very effective as political tools, either.

It’s not about attacking Islam or any other faith. It’s about demonstrating the need to follow the true faith through belief in our Lord and Savior.
