HLI Statement on New Zika Concerns

Statement from HLI president Father Shenan J. Boquet on reports that a child whose mother was infected with Zika has been born with microcephaly in New Jersey:

“All babies born with serious birth defects deserve the best possible care, and their families deserve the best possible support in caring for their children. We continue to recommend that those who may become pregnant and may have been exposed to Zika seek proper diagnosis, and, if having acquired the infection, follow recommended protocols about postponement of pregnancy – the latest being postponement of conception for two months. Since there are concerns that the virus may also spread by sexual contact, a couple should also take this concern under advisement. We are grateful to all those who are working to find ways to understand and stop the spread of the Zika virus, and we hope this work continues and is fruitful, producing real solutions as soon as possible.

“We stand by the principles laid out in our initial statement on the Zika virus, that if a married couple discerns that they have serious reasons to postpone pregnancy that they do so via natural means, and not resort to artificial means which change the nature of the sexual act, making it morally illicit and harmful to marriage. Further, we categorically reject calls for expansion of access to abortion, which neither cures nor prevents the Zika virus, though it is currently being promoted under the dishonest banner of “health” in countries affected by Zika. Abortion only kills a baby and harms a mother; one can never promote the murder of the innocent for any reason, regardless of their stage of development or place in life. To use legitimate health concerns to expand access to abortion in practice or law is disingenuous and will only bring more destruction to communities who are already at risk.”
