A Science Fiction Dilemma

I am not into promoting products.  But for last Christmas my wife bought me a Roku Internet TV device.  I found this old time radio channel.  There is one radio show that I particularly enjoy, which is X Minus One.  It features a different story with different actors and characters in every show.  One of these episodes intrigued me greatly.  I will write about this and then I will say why this particular episode is so important to me.  First of all, the situation is strictly science fiction.  I am not sure there is a situation that could be compared to what I am about to describe.  The story takes place on a spaceship.  The captain of the ship is alone.  His mission is to take medical supplies to a far distant planet.  His fuel has been measured precisely in regard to the weight of the ship and all contents inside of it, including himself.  If there is the slightest overage of weight, his spacecraft will crash.

After take off, his ship enters into the nether regions of space where there is no turning back.  But he discovers a problem on board.  His ship has a stow-a-way who wants to go to this planet.  This stow-a-way is a woman whose husband has been on the destination planet for some four years and she longs to see him.  Knowing this spaceship was bound for this planet, she thought she could be a stow-a-way and the captain would then drop her off with the supplies so she could be with her husband.  This is the tricky part.  If he attempts to land with her on board, the spaceship, all supplies, his life, and her life would be lost.  There wouldn’t be enough fuel on board for him to have a safe landing.  He then tells her that he has no choice but to jettison her into the vastness of space.  She says that she will die.  He tells her they both will die if he attempts to land with her on board and all supplies would be lost putting the lives of the men on the planet in jeopardy.  He has no choice but to jettison her into space where she would most certainly die.  Knowing she has given him no choice, she willingly is jettisoned into space where she is lost forever.

There are choices people make that impact the lives of others in some form or another.  But the question that I wonder about is, whether she committed suicide by boarding the ship or he committed murder by jettisoning her into the vastness of space.  The fact is, I don’t really know.  There are times when some people are forced into making life or death decisions that only God can sort out.  While this story is science fiction, the fact is that there are some things we just can’t know.  It’s why I am not God and I judge no one for God.  I am Brother Ralphie writing for my Angels from The Angels of Life Institute.  Peace.
