Philosophers from around the world and at various times have had to deal with a very significant question: “Who am I??” Identity determines one’s dignity. A carrot is not as significant as a new born babe. A dog is not as important as a teenage rebel. All things and creatures in this world are subordinate to the creation of “the man.” Man is created in the image and likeness of God and so shares a dignity with the angels who are also created beings with a free will and intellect. So the question today is significant: “Who is John?” John the Baptist recognizes that he is not the Christ, nor Elias, nor Jeremias nor one of the prophets. Who then are you?

In a clear and humble statement John reveals that he is a “voice crying out in the

wilderness: make straight the way of the Lord.” His dignity is determined by his relationship to the Christ. Each soul in humility finds that he is nothing without that recognition that he is a being in Christ. Everyone created is created through Him, for Him and in Him. Apart from Him we can do nothing. With Him we can do the impossible, the unthinkable.

If our pride separates us from our Savior then we fall into the trap of the demonic and give ourselves credit for the gifts that God has shared with us. Remember man thou are dust and unto dust thou shalt return. Read
