Bible Story of the Day

Scripture is the story of Jesus, from Genesis to Revelation. There are over 400 prophecies and representations of Jesus in the Old Testament alone. The Old Testament pointed forward to the coming Christ, and the New Testament points back to Jesus. The Bible is a record of redemption through Jesus Christ who conquered sin and death when He died on the cross and resurrected three days later. The New Testament was written almost 2000 years ago. Some of the Old Testament was written over 4000 years ago. The Bible Story of the Day not only shows Jesus throughout scripture but shows how scripture is relevant to our lives today. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. I pray that the Holy Spirit opens your mind to understanding the verses and how they affect your life and gives you a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will post a link to the chapter that each passage is from, so that you can read further on your own.

By His Blood

Zechariah 12:10

10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. (NASB).

Where is Jesus and What Does This Mean to Us?

Zechariah is speaking to the nation of Israel, while in captivity, about a time after their current situation that will be under the protection of God. Jesus is mentioned in this verse when Zechariah writes “Me whom they have pierced, and they will mourn Him as one mourns for an only son.” The piercing reference is speaking about when Jesus is on the cross and the Roman soldier pierces His heart with a spear to ensure He is dead. “They” in this verse is speaking about the house of David, or those that believe Jesus is the Son of God. Additionally, Jesus is the only son of God, as John 3:16 tells us, which explains why one would mourn as for an only son. He is the only son.

What does this mean to us? This is one more example of proof of Jesus being the Christ from the Old Testament. One verse, or one prophecy alone, does not necessarily prove anything. Especially if the prophecy could be fulfilled simply by someone knowing the prophecy and attempting to recreate it. However, this prophecy involves a Roman soldier, and Jesus dying out, crucified on a cross. Jesus did not have much, if any, control of the situation to fake this fulfillment. Again, if it were only one we could have a different discussion, but there are over 400 prophecies and mentioning of Jesus in the Old Testament. I could share proof all day, but at some point, we just must cross a line into the realm of belief and ultimately faith that Jesus is the Messiah sent to save the world from sin and death. What are the odds that a man named Jesus just happened to be pierced while dying on a cross as people mourned for His death? Zechariah wrote this over 500 years before it happened.

The main message of this verse is that of salvation. The blood of Jesus covers us and makes us righteous before God, the Father. Jesus died for us, but it was through the shedding of His blood that we were atoned for our sins. He paid the price that we owed and could never pay on our own. The Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ heart with his spear. A flow of blood and water came out. The shedding of the blood was used in the Old Testament for the atonement of sins for a short period of time. The sacrifice was animals. The shedding of Jesus’ blood was the true sacrifice that covered all sins of all people for all time. It is believed that some of Jesus’ blood landed on the Roman soldier and he believed in Jesus from that point on. No verse specifically states that, but it does not matter if blood touched the soldier or not. We are all covered in the blood of Christ if we believe. By His blood we are made holy. By His blood we are washed clean. By His blood we have been restored to a right relationship with the Father. By His blood we will have eternity with God, as it once was. The only thing we are called to do to receive this gift is to believe with our hearts and profess with our mouths that Jesus Christ is our Messiah and Lord.
