Bible Story of the Day

Scripture is the story of Jesus, from Genesis to Revelation. There are over 400 prophecies and representations of Jesus in the Old Testament alone. The Old Testament pointed forward to the coming Christ, and the New Testament points back to Jesus. The Bible is a record of redemption through Jesus Christ who conquered sin and death when He died on the cross and resurrected three days later. The New Testament was written almost 2000 years ago. Some of the Old Testament was written over 4000 years ago. The Bible Story of the Day not only shows Jesus throughout scripture but shows how scripture is relevant to our lives today. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. I pray that the Holy Spirit opens your mind to understanding the verses and how they affect your life and gives you a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will post a link to the chapter that each passage is from, so that you can read further on your own.

Exodus 12:42-47

⁴² It is a night to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.⁴³ The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: no foreigner is to eat of it; ⁴⁴ but every man’s slave purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat of it. ⁴⁵ A sojourner or a hired servant shall not eat of it. ⁴⁶ It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it. ⁴⁷ All the congregation of Israel are to celebrate this. Where is Jesus and What Does This Mean to Us?

The verse I want to focus on in this passage, for sake of time and space, is verse 46 that states for the Passover lamb to “not have any bone broken of it.” This, along with the representation of Passover as a whole, is a foreshadowing of Jesus being the sacrificial lamb crucified for our atonement. The lamb was not to have any bones broken. Jesus did not have any bones broken when crucified, which was not typical of a Roman crucifixion. Typically, the ankles were broken to finish off the person being crucified, so that they would die quicker. This is a major fulfillment of prophecy that Jesus would have had no control over in fulfilling.

The purpose of showing additional verse is to help in understanding what Passover is, and where it originated from. This was a time to be celebrated, because it was done prior to the final sign of God in freeing the Israelites from Egypt There is much to know and learn about Passover. In short, it is a feast to celebrate God freeing His people from captivity. It was physically represented by freeing His people from Egyptian rule 3000 years ago. The spiritual representation of God freeing us is when Jesus died on the cross and rose 3 days later and freed us from the captivity of sin and death.

What does this mean to us? This is another example of the hundreds of prophecies and representations of the coming Christ as Jesus in the Old Testament. Non-Christian scholars have, almost universally agreed, that the person of Jesus was crucified. For example: Jesus Remembered by James D. G. Dunn published in 2003, states on page 339; “of baptism and crucifixion that these two facts in the life of Jesus command almost universal assent”. I don’t expect that to be stand-alone proof for anyone, but at a minimum I would think that gets the mind stirring. Jesus is the sacrificial lamb that’s blood was shed, without a broken bone to free us from our spiritual captivity. The difference between those that believe this and those that do not is that those that do not remain captives despite the cell door being open.

The “congregation of Israel” means the people of God, or His church (His body). It is for those that believe. As Matthew Henry’s commentary states, “those that do not cover themselves in the protection of the blood of the lamb are on their own and subjected to the wrath of God”. There is no reason to face that wrath. You may feel things in life have put you down, hurt you, scarred you, and made you feel the world, or God is against you, but that is not the truth. The truth is God has given you freedom; the cell door is open. We have all been bent, but in Christ we can remain unbroken.
