Doctors treating the teens afflicted with ‘mystery illness’ come forward

Doctors claim to have been treating 11 of the 12 girls all this time have stepped forward to share the diagnosis with the media

The doctors at Dent Neurology have received permission from the parents to share the diagnosis with the news media. They say they have been working with 11 of the 12 girls, and the diagnosis is a psychological one.

One of the parents who has been receiving treatment at Dent Neurology still maintains that he doesn’t buy it.

Dr. Jennifer McVige at Dent Neurology is treating 11 of the 12 girls from LeRoy High School and as of Wednesday she had permission from a handful of the girls and their parents to talk about their diagnosis.

It’s called Conversion Disorder, which is a disorder in which physical or stressful events are manifested in a physical form. The stressor that triggers it, Dr. McVige says, can be different for everyone.

“When someone is in high school or a teenager is in high school there are stressful things that occur in their life that can cause you to have great discomfort or upset or anxiety about things. So for each person it does not need to be the same thing.”

Between September 2011 and January of this year, 12 teens contracted a “mystery illness.” The teens are all girls, all attend the same school, and all share the same symptoms.

The symptoms include tics, difficulty speaking. The symptoms are worse in some girls than others — some haven’t been able to attend school, and at least one had seizures.

Last week, the story took a turn for the weird when Dr. Gregory Young, of the state health department, addressed 200 parents at a meeting. He attempted to reassure the parents that there had been a full investigation, and many causes — including environmental — had been ruled out.

Dr. Young further explained that the health department was aware of the cause of the ailment, the 12 girls were diagnosed, and were being treated.  However, he declined to name the actual diagnosis. He called it a federal matter, and mentionedHIPAA — which is a federal law that guarantees your health information will be kept private. And that’s fine, but …

All the parents maintained that their children had not received a diagnosis, nor were they being treated. They insisted that the 12 girls were all being seen by their own doctors, and various treatments were being tried; but there had not been a single diagnosis that explained why the 12 girls had these shared symptoms.

Today Show, and Anderson Cooper 360

CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 dedicated a segment of Wednesday night’s programto this story. And 2 of the girls appeared on Tuesday’s edition of the Today Show, with their mothers.

During the Today Show appearance, the parents of 2 of the teens repeated that they were frustrated, and said they weren’t sure the health department was being honest with them. One of the mothers stated they wanted to see evidence that environmental causes had been properly investigated and ruled out.

The school district has since released records of the environmental testing.

The parents also repeated that their daughters were seeing different doctors; and while the girls were receiving individual treatments, parents inisisted at the time that there hasn’t been a single diagnosis for all 12 girls.
