New York City Mystery Illness: "It's Not Gardasil," Says Health Dept

• Gardasil has been named by state health officials as something that is NOT a cause of the illness

12 children in New York have become seriously ill since last September. All share the same “tic-like symptoms,” all 12 girls attend the same school — Le Roy, and all the victims are female. Some have symptoms so severe, they haven’t been able to return to school. At least one has suffered from seizures.

Greg Young, with the NYS Department of Health, told parents a lot of what the cause isn’t. His list included vaccines, food, other environmental causes such as carbon monoxide. He also included stress as a cause, but stated that stress can be a contributing factor to some other cause.

Health Department spokesman Jeff Hammond recently spoke with WGRZ News for an update to their coverage of this story. He emphasized that vaccines have been investigated and are not a cause — and he specifically named Gardasil as having been ruled out.

They have been sent to psychologists, psychiatrists, received CAT scans, and MRIs. Doctors have been totally at a loss to what the cause might be. The story took a turn for the strange when a representative of the state health department claimed all 12 girls had been diagnosed and are being treated.

The parents claim they haven’t been informed about the diagnosis, or the treatment. When parents demanded answers, they were told by the state health department that the information about their children’s diagnosis was confidential — and details couldn’t even be shared with parents.

One representative of the health department, Dr. Greg Young, called the diagnosis a “federal issue.”

Parents of the 12 girls say that there has been no diagnosis; and they insist their children are not receiving treatment for anything.

If the children have actually been diagnosed and are receiving treatment, the parents haven’t given consent. This would mean the victims are being treated as if they are wards of the state, and the parents are somehow no longer the primary care-givers.

Thus, this story illustrates numerous potential causes for concern.

Not ‘Mass Hysteria’

Citing an “expert” in the field of psychology, Buffalo News has theorized that the cause is “mass hysteria.” Their expert, Dr. David G. Lichter, is a clinical professor of neurology at the University at Buffalo.

Keep in mind that Dr. Lichter has not diagnosed the children; he is only sharing his thoughts as to what the cause might be.

The children have seen psychologists, their symptoms have been determined to be very real. According to WGRZ, state officials feel feel that mass hysteria is not the case here.
