‘MYSTERY ILLNESS’ UPDATE: 2 LE ROY TEENS ‘ALL BETTER’

Two children are fully recovered from the “mystery illness,” and three others are showing signs of recovery

Two of the Le Roy teens have experienced a complete recovery. That leaves over a dozen to recover from the “mystery illness” that has plagued Le Roy since last fall.

Experts at Dent Neurologic Institute stand by their diagnosis of Conversion Disorder. This is a stress-related disorder in which various stressors, if not addressed properly (or if not addressed at all), can lead to tics and other symptoms. The teens symptoms have also included difficulty speaking and headaches.

Treatment for Conversion Disorder includes behavior modification, psychological treatment, and medication. Increased stress can interfere with treatment.

MSNBC reports that two girls are fully recovered, and at least three others are well on their way to recovery, according to Dr. Jennifer McVigh of Dent Neurologic Institute. While she credits the treatment being received at Dent Neurology, she also says that the “fading media spotlight” has made a positive difference.

Another doctor from Dent, Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, told CNN: “The media focus, the questions on whether it is environmental or toxins, all that adds confusion, anxiety and difficulty.”

Some of the more skeptical parents aren’t so sure the treatment being received through Dent is what is causing the kids to get better.

Some of these skeptical parents are giving credit to another doctor, Dr. Rosario Trifiletti, a child neurologist from New Jersey. Trifiletti diagnosed eight of the girls with a PANDAS-like illness, and prescribed antibiotics. Some say it’s those girls who are getting better.

This hypothesis is used to describe a set of children who have a rapid onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorders such as Tourette syndrome (TS), following group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) infections such as “strep throat” and scarlet fever.
