By 11:05 a.m., staff at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center had vaccinated 63.1 percent of their co-workers against the flu.

That’s 3,976 people vaccinated in just less than 30 hours, with 12 more hours to reach all 6,303 St. Francis employees or, at least, as many as possible.

Universal flu vaccines for employees are a priority at St. Francis. Hospital officials say they want to make sure employees don’t spread the flu to patients or each other or get it from them.

But St. Francis’ “mass influenza immunization drill” was as much practice for a disastrous emergency –
think bioterrorism, chemical spill or a deadly virus pandemic – as it was precaution against the flu.
