FLASHBACK 2010: Govt ‘demands backdoors in all systems’

FT.com is reporting:

A range of US hardware and software companies are in danger of being dragged into the widening scandal over internet surveillance, following the latest leaks from Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor. The leaked documents include NSA claims that it has collaborated with technology companies to plant “back doors” into their systems – or ways for the agency secretly to penetrate systems without the users’ knowledge.

It’s understandable that this is a big breaking story, and that companies who had been cooperating stand to have their credibility hit, it’s not like we hadn’t been warned.

In 2009, the NSA admitted that they had worked with Microsoft in development of Windows 7. Now … why else would a spy agency be involved with development of an operating system except to implement a way to spy on people?

And in 2010 the Electronic Frontier Foundation sued the Justice Department over their pressuring companies into installing backdoors to their programs.

Maybe the truth wasn’t unavoidable enough at the time.
