Bakeware Bingo

After the holidays, many of you have probably made the commitment to start baking more, while some might have made the promise to just start baking. Whatever the case, you’re planning to spend more time in the kitchen, but you need something of a kick start.

It’s not always easy, starting out baking, what with all the tools you have to familiarize yourself with. There are all sorts of different pans and baking sheets, molds, mats and other tools that you need to use to be able to make wonders in the kitchen, and it can be a bit overwhelming when you’ve just started baking and only know the basics. Luckily, you don’t have to go in blind, as a quick bingo game can help you out.

Bingo has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until recently that the game really made a comeback. In the UK, it’s reported that there were around 20 online bingo sites in 2004, and by 2012, there were over 350. This exponential growth has prompted many different companies to start looking into using bingo to promote their brands. Back in 2012, when British supermarket chain Iceland Foods launched their own bingo site on the Dragonfish Network, their CEO said, “we are excited to take our popular consumer brand into the world of online bingo , which is something we know that many of our customers enjoy. Now mums – and dads – can come to Iceland Bingo, too.”

But it’s not just commercial brands – even educational and government establishments have used the popularity of the game to help spread information. The UK’s Food Standards Agency derived a game called Eatwell Bingo to help others become more acquainted with the Eatwell Plate – the new standard of healthy eating. In much the same way, a game of Bakeware Bingo can help you become more aware of the tools in the kitchen.

Just as with baking, this game requires a bit of preparation, but offers great rewards if you’re patient enough to see things through. First thing you need to do is make a list of sixteen different baking tools, and then use a bingo card generator like the one on osric.com to turn your list into a 4×4 bingo card. Here’s a couple of sample cards:

Your bingo call cards should have descriptions of each of the items in your list, as well as some of their uses and projects that they can be used for. For example, the call card for “Ramekin” should read something like: “It’s a small, glazed, ceramic bowl usually used to make crème brulee, molten lava cakes, and soufflé.” When it comes time to start playing, distribute the cards to your friends, and start drawing the call cards out of a hat or box. Whenever each item is called out, everyone goes through their cards to find the matching baking tool and marks it off. The first one to complete a pattern – be it horizontal, diagonal, or vertical – on their card wins the game.
