Egg-in-a-hole Burger Recipe

I have always enjoyed breakfast burgers. There is something about the combination of a fried egg and ground beef that I always seem to enjoy. This egg in a hole burger is just like the name says—a hole is made in a ground beef patty and then an egg is poured into the center and cooked. The burger is topped off with American cheese for even more flavor. You can add additional burger toppings as well. You can use a glass to make the hole in the beef patty or try using a spoon or butter knife, you will want to be careful when you are doing this to hold the shape of the burger patty. You will want to use a medium egg for this burger because a large egg may be too much. This recipe will make enough for 1 serving but you can easily double the ingredients to serve two. Enjoy.

Egg-in-a-hole Burger

Yield: 1 Serving

Ingredients:
  • 1/3lb ground chuck
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 slice American cheese (or cheddar)
  • 1 hamburger bun
Directions:
  1. Shape the ground chuck into a patty. Be sure to pack it together tightly. Season on both sides with salt and pepper. Take a small glass and press it down into the center of the burger to cut a hole into the burger. Remove the piece of ground beef from the center (you can shape the piece of ground beef into a small patty and cook it for eating as well).
  2. Break the egg into a small bowl and set aside. Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burger patty with the hole cut out. Cook until browned and crisp on one side, about 1-3 minutes. Flip the burger. Pour the egg into the hole (if it looks like the egg will overflow hold it back and reserve some of the egg white for another use). Cook on medium-low, covered (use a glass lid if you have one so that you can see) until the egg is done to your liking. Top with a slice of American cheese and cook until the cheese has melted.
  3. Place on the bun with any toppings you desire.
