Norfolk, VA – Four homicide suspects have been taken off the streets of Hampton Roads already this week. Just yesterday, U.S. Marshals arrested a murder suspect who was on the run from Illinois, as well as a longtime Portsmouth resident who was recently charged for a June homicide in Henrico. Earlier in the week, U.S. Marshals and Norfolk detectives made two separate homicide arrests.
On Monday, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Norfolk detectives arrested Malcolm Robinson for a homicide that occurred on Saturday. On Tuesday, U.S. Marshals and Norfolk detectives arrested Grenah Garnett who was charged with killing a man the day prior.
On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Marshals and members of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and Chesapeake Police Department and arrested 34-year-old Winston Bernard Black Jr. in Chesapeake. Black, a longtime Portsmouth resident, was charged for allegedly shooting a man to death on June 10, 2016, at the Motel 6 on Williamsburg Road in Henrico. On August 18, 2016, Black was charged with attempted first degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony for his alleged role in this shooting, and the Henrico Police Department asked the U.S. Marshals to locate and arrest Black. Black is being held at the Chesapeake City Jail awaiting extradition to Henrico.
Early Wednesday evening, U.S. Marshals arrested a fugitive in Hampton who was wanted for murder in Harvey, Illinois. On June 14, 2016, it is alleged that 31-year-old Antowaun Mathis shot and killed a male victim. On June 21, 2016, Mathis was charged with first degree murder and the Harvey Police Department asked the U.S. Marshals in Chicago for assistance in arresting Mathis. U.S. Marshals figured out that Mathis had fled Illinois and was staying with family in Hampton. Mathis is being held at the Hampton City Jail awaiting extradition to Illinois.
The U.S. Marshals-led Fugitive Task Force consists of law enforcement officers from the U.S. Marshals, Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, Newport News Police Department, Portsmouth Police Department and Norfolk Police Department. The main objective of the task force is to seek out and arrest violent offenders with outstanding federal and state warrants.
