U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force Arrests Attempted Murder Suspect

Scranton, PA – United States Marshal Martin J. Pane announced today that the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force arrested Nyriq Johnson, 21, in Scranton, PA.

On October 12, 2016, it is alleged that Johnson shot a handgun in the direction of multiple people. Fortunately, no one was struck by any rounds fired. It is also alleged that after the shooting, Johnson fled the scene on foot. The Scranton Police Department obtained an arrest warrant charging Johnson with criminal attempt, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of firearm prohibited firearms not to be carried without a license, simple assault and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.

On October 13, Deputy U.S. Marshals, task force officers and Scranton Police, located and arrested Johnson without incident in the 1000 block of Cooper Street. Johnson was turned over to local authorities pending further judicial proceedings.

United States Marshal Martin J. Pane stated, “The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force places a high priority on fugitive cases in which there is the use or threat of violence against our citizens. Our community will not be a safe haven for those charged with such violent crimes and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring violent offenders to justice.”

The USMS worked jointly in this investigation with personnel from the Scranton Police Department.
