Choosing a Rug is just like Choosing a Fine Painting

People will often buy rugs to serve a particular purpose, such as to create a soft area on hard floor, to better insulate a room in their home, or even to cover up a defect on the floor. However, the most common reason people decide to purchase a rug is because of its aesthetic value. It doesn’t matter whether the rug is to be used in your home or in your workspace, it will always serve as a statement of your interior design.

Paintings serve the same purpose for adding aesthetic value to a space, and, like choosing a fine painting to hang on the wall, you want to choose a rug that will better furnish the room, and add a focal point to the floor space.  

The size, shape, and pattern/design of a rug are all factors that should be considered prior to purchasing; what impact do you want the rug to have on your guests? It is the same with paintings, although, unlike, paintings, rugs are generally not open to personal interpretation. The design and creation process for both rugs and paintings is very similar; both require a great deal of creativity and intricate handiwork, as the artist/maker attempts to produce a high quality piece of work that they know will be discussed and scrutinised by others.

Unlike paintings though, rugs can be used differently; for example, furniture may be placed on top of, or to cover parts of, the rug. This depends on what the rug is used for: again, is it a practical addition to your home that serves a particular function, or is it designed to act as a showstopper piece to impress family and friends? If you wish to purchase a painting by a recognised artist, then you should rightly expect to pay more than the price of a rug. However, high-end, luxury, bespoke rugs can, too, be very dear.

When you initially see a painting you like, the main question you should ask yourself is, what attracted you to it in the first place? The same can be said with rugs. Like paintings, we tend to examine the colour, style, shape and overall quality. A painting is able to make or break a room by instantly changing the mood or look of how a particular space feels. Many artists long for this effect, although often consumers buy paintings to fit, and compliment, the surrounding environment.

Generally, the fundamental reason one buys vintage rugs or a fine painting is that one wants it to be seen, and to define the space it occupies. It’s easy to assert that a designer rug or a painting is primarily an ornamental piece, but unlike other type of decors, art or rugs can be timeless classic products. Fine art does not go out of style, and neither should your luxury rug!
