Yellowstone Supervolcano is Roaring Back to Life – What is the Worst Case Scenario ?

Right now, the ground underneath Yellowstone National Park is rising at a record rate. In fact, it is rising at the rate of about three inches per year. The reason why this is such a concern is because underneath the park sits the Yellowstone supervolcano — the largest volcano in North America.

From Nemesis Maturity

Scientists tell us that it is inevitable that it will erupt again one day, and when it does the devastation will be almost unimaginable. A full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would dump a 10 foot deep layer of volcanic ash up to 1,000 miles away, and it would render much of the United States uninhabitable.

When most Americans think of Yellowstone, they tend to conjure up images of Yogi Bear and “Old Faithful”, but the truth is that sleeping underneath Yellowstone is a volcanic beast that could destroy our nation in a single day and now that beast is starting to wake up. The Yellowstone supervolcano is so vast that it is hard to put it into words. According to the experts, the magma “hotspot” underneath Yellowstone is approximately 300 miles wide.

That is why what is going on at Yellowstone right now is so important, and the American people deserve the truth.

A recent scientific paper by the The Geological Society Of America titled: Future volcanism at Yellowstone caldera, suggests that previous eruptions have come from deep within the volcano and they have occurred very rapidly.

Yellowstone Volcano: Geologists Say It Will Blow Without Warning

These source regions coincide with the upper parts of the present-day imaged magma chamber, while the faults focus much of the present-day caldera unrest.

Based on these combined observations, we propose that volcanism has a higher probability to resume in three fault-controlled NNW-trending lineaments, the first coinciding with the western caldera rim, the second lying across the central region of the caldera, and the third extending across the northeastern caldera.

The first two lineaments focused recent intracaldera volcanism (174–70 ka), while the latter is the most active in terms of current caldera unrest.

Future volcanism could include large-volume lava flows and phreato-magmatic rhyolitic eruptions. The identification of these three regions together with potentially rapid eruptive mechanisms may help to better define future monitoring efforts necessary to improve eruption forecasting in this vast area of volcanic unrest.

What this means is that science is only beginning to understand just how volatile Yellowstone is, but doesn’t yet know how it will next erupt or when.
