Detroit Killing Kids: Ambulance Shortage And budget Woes Gutting Fire Dept
In Detroit a 6 year old boy is dead and his 4 year old brother is critically injured after being pulled from a house fire by firefighters. The brothers, 6-year-old Miguel Chavez and 4-year-old Julio Chavez, were transported to the hospital by firefighters because EMS was not available to transport the children to the hospital.
Detroit Fire officials said the rescue squad performed CPR on both children on the way to Henry Ford Hospital. A firefighter’s rescue squad is equipped with medical equipment, jaws of life, generators and ropes for rescue, but they aren’t typically used as a substitute for EMS rigs and don’t have the medical equipment that ambulances have.
