39% of “elite” liberal arts colleges have 0 registered Republican professors – as in NONE

We are not big fans of Dems or Republicans. However political registrations can provide a handy, if fuzzy tool for accessing a general political bent. When an institution of higher learning, indeed almost half of the surveyed colleges have NO registered Republicans on the ENTIRE faculty there’s a problem.

It speaks to the widespread and very deep bias, “bias” is too nice a word, persecution, of those who hold less statist, more classically liberal beliefs. And God forbid if one is a social conservative.

No wonder we have students yelling at university leadership at the top of their lungs that they “don’t feel safe” because of someone somewhere uttered a word that might have slightly, just had the wrong tone for the PC brigades. (This happened at Yale, and probably has at many other places.)

We are not saying that universities should engage in some sort of affirmative action program for “conservative” professors. But when we wonder why such PC idiocy is indulged on so many campuses one should look to the people making the faculty hiring decisions. Is there widespread and systematic discrimination going on? This report certainly points to a big “YES.”

This has long been the goal for the PC “warriors.” Marginalize those who have non-PC, non-statist (or even less statist), opinions on campus until there is a monoculture of social justice group think, where lazy thinking and nonsense are rewarded so long as students and faculty engage in right kind of lazy thinking and nonsense.

Right now the PC brigades think they have the colleges sewn up. They think that people have been so brow beaten into accepting the PC authoritarian ethos on campuses that the PC-authoritarians are on easy street forever.

Funny thing though. Generations change and revolutions do occur. For the sake of free thought, liberty, real academic inquiry, and just plain reality, let’s hope the anti-PC revolution comes soon. (It can’t come soon enough.)

Notice by the way that engineers tend to be much more Republican, yet there are NO Republican “communications” professors at this sample of “elite” colleges. Think about that. Engineers must deal with reality, things like gravity, amplitude, chemical reactions, tinsel strength. “Communications” on the other hand is about crafting narratives and spin. These people often end up going to journalism school. What does that tell you?

In this article I offer new evidence about something readers of Academic Questions already know: The political registration of full-time, Ph.D.-holding professors in top-tier liberal arts colleges is overwhelmingly Democratic. Indeed, faculty political affiliations at 39 percent of the colleges in my sample are Republican free—having zero Republicans. The political registration in most of the remaining 61 percent, with a few important exceptions, is slightly more than zero percent but nevertheless absurdly skewed against Republican affiliation and in favor of Democratic affiliation. Thus, 78.2 percent of the academic departments in my sample have either zero Republicans, or so few as to make no difference.

My sample of 8,688 tenure track, Ph.D.–holding professors from fifty-one of the sixty-six top ranked liberal arts colleges in the U.S. News 2017 report consists of 5,197, or 59.8 percent, who are registered either Republican or Democrat. The mean Democratic-to-Republican ratio (D:R) across the sample is 10.4:1, but because of an anomaly in the definition of what constitutes a liberal arts college in the U.S. News survey, I include two military colleges, West Point and Annapolis.¹ If these are excluded, the D:R ratio is a whopping 12.7:1…

…Political homogeneity is problematic because it biases research and teaching and reduces academic credibility. In a recent book on social psychology, The Politics of Social Psychology edited by Jarret T. Crawford and Lee Jussim, Mark J. Brandt and Anna Katarina Spälti, show that because of left-wing bias, psychologists are far more likely to study the character and evolution of individuals on the Right than individuals on the Left.² Inevitably affecting the quality of this research, though, George Yancey found that sociologists prefer not to work with fundamentalists, evangelicals, National Rifle Association members, and Republicans.³Even though more Americans are conservative than liberal, academic psychologists’ biases cause them to believe that conservatism is deviant.

Much of academia is comfortable wallowing in their particular brand of overt racism, political bias, and insularity. The institution also enjoys a media echo chamber that reinforces their philosophy of politically correct, anti-Western, authoritarianism. It’s dangerous. The PC brigades are not “progressive.” They are in many cases flat out anti-thought. They are anti-Enlightenment. One could argue pretty effectively that the PC brigades are anti-TRUTH.

As we’ve suggested before perhaps it’s time for an alumni strike. So long as these colleges and universities keep giving safe harbor to people who are anti-thought and pro-political correctness, don’t send them any money. The colleges will get the hint very quickly. They’ll complain. But they’ll figure things out when the cash starts to dry up.
