Security troops on US nuclear missile base took LSD

We are advocates of drug liberalization here. The drug war has been a disaster. In a free society we need to look at drugs differently than we have over the past 50 years.

Saying this, nuclear weapons and acid do not mix. It is entirely reasonable to expect people who are working with and around doomsday machines to abstain from seriously mind altering drugs. Even if these drugs were completely legal I think it is absolutely OK to insist that people poking around nuke silos not partake. That should be a requirement for the job. It’s not much to ask.

Consider also that the launch codes for the US Minuteman nukes at one point was, and this is not a joke, 00000000.

A slipup on social media by one airman enabled investigators to crack the drug ring at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in March 2016, details of which are reported here for the first time. Fourteen airmen were disciplined. Six of them were convicted in courts martial of LSD use or distribution or both.

None of the airmen was accused of using drugs on duty. Yet it’s another blow to the reputation of the Air Force’s nuclear missile corps, which is capable of unleashing hell in the form of Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs. The corps has struggled at times with misbehavior, mismanagement and low morale.

Not a lot to do in Minot North Dakota it’s probably pretty fair to say.

One additional note. – I had a government teacher in high school who argued that if the Soviets had known what they were doing in the 1970s they would have launched an attack in Europe on a Friday night because half the listed troops in Europe were smoking hash on Friday nights. I have no idea if that is actually true but he was a good teacher.
