Va. House Passes Resolution Calling Roe v. Wade Anniversary the ‘Day of Tears’

The Virginia House of Delegates voted 57-36 Wednesday to adopt a resolution calling January 22nd, the day that the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was a constitutional right, a “Day of Tears in Virginia” and saying “that the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia are encouraged to lower their flags to half-staff to mourn the innocents who have lost their lives to abortion.”

“By making a visual step in support of life, hopefully we can help save lives,” Rockbridge Del. Ben Cline (R), who introduced the resolution, said at a news conference. “And ultimately, this is what that’s all about.”

Virginia House Democratic Caucus Chair Charniele Herring spoke on the floor just prior to the resolution’s passage, calling it “an insidious way to attack the dignity and privacy of women who have made a choice regarding their own life and health.”

“If tears must be shed, it should be shed for those women who have irreparably harmed themselves – who faced hemorrhaging and infection because they lacked access to health care,” Herring said.

The Virginia branch of the abortion advocacy organization NARAL called the resolution “yet another example of Virginia politicians trying to shame women for their personal reproductive decisions and stigmatize abortion.”

The national NARAL account tweeted Wednesday “The #VA house voted today for #RoevWade anniversary to be called the “Day of Tears.” Yes, seriously.”

Because the bill is a House resolution, it does not go on to the Virginia Senate or Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who has vetoed pro-life legislation in the past. The resolution simply stands as the opinion of the House of Delegates.
