The past year has been an exciting time at Emsi. We’ve improved all of our standing products for higher education as well as created two brand new datasets, Alumni Insight (released January 2017) and Compensation Data (release date TBD). Here is a quick summary of our improvements and new services.
Analyst has received a number of significant updates in Job Posting Analytics (JPA) and I-O Model, and now includes the brand new Program Market Demand Report and Drive Time.
1. The revamped Job Posting Analytics (JPA) offers heightened granularity of both location and skill. (Side note: Data around top work environments is no longer provided.)

3. JPA’s new keyword search functionality lets you search for anything. Literally, anything. Say hello to a whole new world of unexplored analysis—from emerging skills to hyper-specific keywords.
4. View the full text of job postings and gain invaluable context as you step into the shoes of the employer. Understand exactly what employers are looking for so you can better align your programs with employer needs, identify emerging skills and occupations, and more.
It’s critical to look at the big picture. That’s exactly why we developed the Program Market Demand Report. It compiles the most relevant education, job postings, and occupation data into one place to give you a comprehensive picture of the labor market demand related to a program. Simply pick your program(s) of choice and region, and the report will automatically connect to relevant data using our CIP (program) to SOC (occupation) mapping.
A few highlights from the report:
Emsi’s updated I-O model has made the switch to rely on gross state product to calculate sales figures. What does this mean for you? In short, improved accuracy in regionalized data that is now fully consistent with published totals at both the state and national level.
Analyst’s new feature, Drive Time, lets you easily select a region based on the time it takes to drive there from any city, address, intersection, business, or landmark (anything included in Google Maps). Now you can analyze the nearby workforce or pool of potential students by creating a custom region far more specific than Analyst’s zip code search allows.

New for 2017
Emsi continues to innovate new ways to help colleges and universities bless the lives of their students as well as the regional economy. Just this January, we released Alumni Insight, a new dataset derived from over 65 million online professional profiles that lets you discover where your graduates live, where they work, whether their careers relate to their majors, and more. Questions that used to require alumni surveys (expensive and often inefficient) can now be answered in a single place.
The new data in Alumni Insight will also help colleges address issues concerning the gainful employment of their graduates. At a time when college programs are under intense scrutiny, Emsi’s latest data release will lend authoritative analysis for colleges demonstrating the real-world value of their programs.

Soon, we will also release Compensation Data, a new dataset that combines 22.7M curated résumés from CareerBuilder with Emsi’s own labor market-driven wages from 150M jobs (gained from standardized federal sources). Using our occupation code-level benchmark, we have done what no one else has been able to do: significantly reduce the rampant sample bias in self-reported compensation.
The result? A solid estimation of compensation. From here we estimate how much a position should be paid—including how much experience, industry, and particular skills effect the salary range. Colleges can use this data to set pay bands for staff and faculty, as well as demonstrate the market value of their programs.
After all the progress in 2016, we couldn’t be more thrilled and motivated for 2017. Our goal is to continue to innovate new products and improve existing services to help colleges promote student success and boost economic prosperity in the communities they serve.
