Lost city of Atlantis may have been found near Spain -- findings will be unveiled on Sunday, March 13

DATELINE ZERO - A research team may have finally located the legendary Lost City of Atlantis, in southern Spain. If new findings are correct, the city was swamped in a massive tsunami thousands of years ago in mud flats in southern Spain. “This is the power of tsunamis,” head researcher Richard Freund told Reuters.

“It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that’s pretty much what we’re talking about,” said Freund, a University of Hartford, Connecticut, professor who lead an international team searching for the true site of Atlantis.

The team’s findings will be unveiled on Sunday in “Finding Atlantis,” a new National Geographic Channel special. The University of Hartford’s Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies, which is led by Freund, hosted an advance screening of the documentary Wednesday, March 9, on campus. [Photos here.]

This story isn’t quite as intriguing and entertaining as the “OMG Google Earth discovered Atlantis!” story from 2009. However, it certainly has much more credibility. Also a plus for Freund’s theory is the fact that there could be more evidence to support this theory than the “Atlantis-is-near-Cuba” one.

That said, sometimes the most plausible theory is also the most mundane one. It’s possible that there was never an Atlantis. Let me explain: there’s a damn good theory that “Atlantis” was really Santorini, the once vibrant island community in the Aegean north of Crete. Robert Sullivan, author of Atlantis Rising : The True Story of a Submerged Land-Yesterday and Today, says: “Many centuries ago a mammoth volcano did, without question, destroy an advance civilization. That’s certainly what Plato had in mind when he lectured on Atlantis. Or, at least, that’s what I came to conclude.”
