Beijing Charging Stations to be Installed by China’s State Grid Corp.

Beijing, Tianjin, Nanchang and Hefei are the first cities that the State Grid Corporation of China, the world’s largest electricity transmission and distribution company, plans to expand and install new plug-in vehicle chargers. A few years ago the SGCC outlined how they planned to install the chargers nation-wide and although it has not exactly crossed the country yet, the first four cities are schedule to have the charging stations expanded before the end of the year.

The General Manager of the SGCC, Liu Zhenya, said at the company’s annual work meeting in Beijing that the major service of the stations will be for providing batteries that are already recharged. Most of the batteries will be charged at night and the used batteries will be recycled.

“On average, oil-powered car owners spend 70 yuan (US$10.6) on fuel cost for driving 100 kilometers at present. But a user of battery-powered auto just needs to pay 20 yuan for the same journey,” Liu said.

Besides the obvious benefits of the main purpose of the charging stations, once installed, these charging stations will serve an even more important function, actual data of real-world tests. With this data SGCC plans to work out any problems and stream line procedures before attempting to get the government’s go ahead to do installs across the rest of the country.
