Could be a salt dome problem. If so salinity of the water might be a clue. There was a lake on the edge of a salt dome and a drilling error punctured a salt mine, causing the lake to drain.
Has there been a mandatory or voluntary evacuation of the area? People could end up like Harry Truman when Mt. St. Helens blew.
