Part 15: Series On Overpopulation In America Endless population growth not tolerated by Nature

Part 15: Humanity will not be allowed to continue unending population growth

“Somehow, we have come to think the whole purpose of the economy is to grow, yet growth is not a goal or purpose. The pursuit of endless growth is suicidal.”  David Suzuki

This summer, Canadian environmentalist and population specialist David Suzuki emphatically stated, “Canada is full.”

He might have added, “It’s overloaded with too many people, too much environmental destruction, too much pollution, too little arable land and too little food to feed its endless growth.”

Like Australia, demographers call Canada a “Big little country.”    It’s big in size, but little in arable land to grow food.    The same can be said about Australia.  That continent enjoys 2.9 million square miles, but 95 percent of it remains arid desert with limited water and arable land. 

Canada faces the similar harsh realities of a truncated growing season and scant arable land.  Finally, an environmental stalwart like David Suzuki stated the obvious:  “Canada is full.”

Nonetheless, the “power paradigm” in Canada continues on its merry path of endless population growth via immigration.   While Canadian citizens chose 2.1 children per woman three decades ago, the “endless growth masters” force that country toward endless human growth—even with the knowledge that at some point in time, they will not possess enough arable land, enough energy, enough resources and enough environment to sustain the next 10 million people added to Canada.

The same thing proceeds in Canada’s little brother; the United States of America.  American women chose 2.03 children fertility rates starting in 1970.  But, Congress created a 1.2 million annual immigration onslaught that added 100 million people to the USA within 40 years.  If continued, the U.S. will add another 138 million within 37 years.

But no one sneezes at the accelerating consequences.  The late Dr. Albert Bartlett first began presenting his “Arithmetic, Population and Energy” to Congressional audiences back in 1969.  He proved conclusively that “exponential growth” cannot be sustained.  He presented scientific proof of his law. 

“Unlimited population growth cannot be sustained; you cannot sustain growth in the rates of consumption of resources. No species can overrun the carrying capacity of a finite land mass. Nonetheless, the U.S. Congress imported 100 million people within four decades.  Canada, at the same time, decided to fatten its demographic destiny with similar immigration policies.  Today, Europe imitates those policies as well as Australia.

But none of those civilizations “looks” at why those immigrants flee their countries.  None look at the final demographic numbers.  None “see” that the immigrants flee their countries because they already reached the “population saturation level” that spells doom to inhabitants of overpopulated societies.   Canada, America, Australia and America think they can escape the ultimate outcome:  collapsing civilizations.

Ultimately, what happened to those societies in Diamond’s book and what Ehrlich forecasted—will occur in Canada, Europe, Australia and America.   At some point in time, as shown in Bartlett’s test tube demonstration, humans will not be able to save themselves.

Unfortunately, they pursue Suzuki’s quote with continuing fertility rates that will add three billion people to the planet net gain within 37 years.  “The pursuit of endless growth is suicidal.”

Are Canadians making fun of Suzuki while they make fun of Malthus?

Why didn’t a man of Ehrlich’s stature transform America into a realistic plan for population stabilization, which would have led our civilization toward a viable and sustainable future?  Why did we add 100 million people in 40 years in the light of such scientific evidence of our ultimate demise?

Three things factor into our human stupidity, arrogance and continued fecundity around the planet.

Humanity’s three major follies pertaining to overpopulation

Religions—promote endless human growth as a mantra to the requests of “God” to go forth and multiply.  Even with the environmental realities of today and with 18 million people starving to death annually, which includes 10 million children, year after year—the Pope and Imans and other religious leaders call for endless birth rates.   They spew, “It’s against God’s laws to practice birth control or abortion.”  Thus, humans add a net gain of 80 million of themselves annually.   Even in the face of mass starvation, seemingly intelligent men holding enormous power to educate or fool their followers—choose to lead their minions down that “suicidal” path to ultimate starvation and planetary carnage.

Capitalism—promotes endless population growth as a mantra for endless production and consumption of products.  Powerful money elites thrive within a system that calls for total destruction of the natural world as shown in the movie “Avatar.”   Can they be called “intelligent”?   Do they realize the extent and result their detrimental actions?   Dr. Jack Alpert, www.skil.orgcalled their suicidal behaviors a form of systematic unconscious and selective mental denial. 

Manifest destiny—promotes the idea that America enjoys a special “God ordained” exceptionalism.  The same applies to most other leaders and countries of the world.  Somehow, humans enjoy “God’s grace” and a special elevation to “human sacredness” in the eyes of the universe.  We think we represent the only species made in the image of God.

A few other words could be thrown into the mix of humanity’s self-driven suicidal predicament:  arrogant, clever, myopic, stupid, laughable, insufferable and finally, dim-witted in the face of accelerating facts and reality.

(The more people brought into the world, the less each person means to the world and the more environmental damage caused by water use, energy use, resource use and resulting climate destabilization.  Not to mention species extinctions running at 100 creatures daily, acidified oceans, quality of life and standard of living issues.)
