(Before It's News)
John Kershaw, Chairman of The Freedom Association’s Management Committee and a long-standing Member of TFA’s Council, died suddenly last week. The news came as a great shock to us all.
John was also a very active chairman of Manchester Civic Society and a lover of all things Mancunian – not least that city’s pubs, some of which he fought hard to save from destruction.
John, who rarely missed any of our events, was what I would call a ‘character and three-quarters’, but he was also a genuinely libertarian conservative, with a strong belief that the state should not meddle in people’s lives more than was absolutely necessary. The photograph of John, above, shows him by the statue of that great defender of a free press, John Wilkes. Appropriately enough, it was taken at the start of a pub crawl along Fleet Street.
I know that many of us will miss John, but The Freedom Association, to which he devoted so much of his time and energy, will continue to champion the causes he held dear.
