Have you heard of Russia Insider? It’s new to me. Here’s Lana at Red Ice talking to American Charles Bausman about his unique view of Russia. His take is certainly refreshing in the wake of the current Russia wot done it hysteria.

Charles Bausman is the editor and publisher of Russia Insider. He has worked in finance in Russia since the early 1990s, specializing since 2009 in large-scale investments in agriculture. He worked for NBC News in Moscow in the late 1980s. Charles has an MBA in finance from Columbia University, and a degree in history from Wesleyan University. He speaks Russian and German.

Lana welcomes Charles to the program to talk about Russia, the endemic anti-Russia hysteria in Western media, and his alternative media website, Russia Insider. Our conversation begins with Charles telling us about his background in business and media. He then recounts how Russia Insider originally started three years ago as a hobby when conflict in the Ukraine began. Charles was furious about the lies perpetuated by the American media about the war and founded the site with several expat colleagues. It immediately gained an enthusiastic subscriber base. Lana and Charles go on to talk about the importance of having an alternative media voice that has Russia as its main area of focus. We move on to talk about Russia’s geopolitical situation: its geographic enormity, its aggressive neighbours, and regional demographic pressures. The opening segment’s discussion also delves into Russian society, politics, religion, internet censorship, and Russian military innovation.

In the member’s part, Lana asks Charles about his widely read essay entitled It’s Time to Drop the Jew Taboo, which garnered a record number of views and generated hundreds of comments. While it solicited some negative reactions, there was an overwhelmingly positive response from alternative media readership. Charles quite rightly states that there should be no group immune to criticism.
