San Diego On Fire, Thousands Evacuated, 1500 Acres Burned

Thousands of people fled thomes Wednesday as one of five fast-moving wildfires destroyed over two dozen homes as it tore through San Diego’s suburb of Carlsbad.

“San Diego County proclaimed a local emergency Wednesday afternoon due to “at least five wildland fires burning,” the county said.

Five fires are burning across Southern California in a blistering heat wave after months of drought. 

Statewide drought, hot, dry Santa Ana winds, low humidity and 90-degree-plus temperatures conspired to quintuple the number of wildfires Wednesday, that began with 350 firefighters fighting a 1,500-acre wildfire in San Diego,” reports WFMZ.

Mandatory evacuations were in progress in coastal city about 30 miles north of San Diego. Over 11,000 notices were sent to homes and businesses.

Legoland California amusement park was closed Wednesday due to a power outage.

Thirty homes had burned in Carlsbad by Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said they know of at least three homes totally destroyed and 15 damaged or destroyed.

No immediate injuries have been reported. 

Carlsbad officials said in a press conference that fire crews had days of work ahead of them.
