A plane carrying senior Lao government officials crashed Saturday in a forested area of the Southeast Asian country, killing top officials of the Lao government. First responders were helping to rescue surivors.

The Laos deputy prime minister, Douangchay Phichit, and Thongbane Sengaphone, the minister of public security were among those killed in the plabe crash, according to two Lao diplomats. The governor of Vientiane province was also killed in the crash.

Both Douangchay Phichit and his wife, said Nipat Thonglek are among those killed. Douangchay was also one of the country’s deputy prime ministers and a high-ranking member of Laos’ Politburo, the main decision-making body for the authoritarian nation’s ruling Communist Party.

In addition to his post as deputy prime minister Mr. Douangchay was defense minister and a member of the Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the Communist party.

Mr. Thongbane, public security head, was feared in Laos, according to NY Times. He was said to be one of the officials leading a crackdown against dissent over the past year and half.

That crackdown included the disappearance of the most prominent civic leader in the country, Sombath Somphone, a United States-trained agriculture specialist who led efforts to liberalize the hermetic communist leadership. Mr. Sombath was stopped at a police checkpoint in Dec. 2012 and reportedly never seen again.

About 20 people were believed to be on board the air force plane that left Vientiane, Laos’ capital, early Saturday morning to bring the group to an official ceremony in the northeastern province of Xiangkhoung, about 470 kilometers (290 miles) away, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee.

The Russian-made Antonov AN-7KTK300 crashed in the Pek district of Xiangkhoung province, where authorities were “helping to rescue the survivors,” according Lao news agency KPL, that cited an announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Lao news agency posted photos to a web site Saturday showing the mangled wreckage of the plane, a Russian-made Antonov AN-74TK300.

The plane was traveling from the capital, Vientiane, to the mountainous northeastern province of Xiangkhouang, where the officials were due to attend a military ceremony.

Laos is a landlocked country, communist, and one of Asia’s poorest national.
