1-3M Am. Youth With Life-Threatening Hidden Plague: Homelessness. Malibu 'Finding Hope' Thursday

A silent killer is impacting 1-3 million American youth: voiceless runaways, homeless and trafficked, a United States human rights issue of which many adults painfully know, see or have been personally impacted. This is addressed in a short film PBS is airing this fall, but parents, caretakers and other child advocates will get to view the short and learn more from its award-winning filmmaker Thursday in Malibu.

Teen fugitives

In America, 1 million to 3 million runaway (throwaway) and homeless children and youth live on the streets every day and night, risking being trafficked for sex and other abuse, hidden realities in the United States.

Eighty percent of those females have been sexually or physically abused. They live in fear. They need hope, the kind fstory teller and award-winning filmmaker Diane Namm creates for humanity.

“American girls trapped in abusive homes have two choices,” the filmmaker says, “surrender or escape.”

Fear of reprisal and fear of endangering other loved ones serve to keep the girls in line, according to Namm..

But for those like Esmee Johnson, who will not give in or give up, escape is the only way, so Esmee runs.

Pursued by the cult she escapes, persecuted by the government who wants to use her as a witness, and wanted by the pimps who conned her into seeking refuge with them — Esmee runs to stay alive.

Like many of the up to three million “throw-away” children and youth in the United States, Esmee becomes a teen fugitive in her quest for — finding hope.

As a writing mentor, Diane Namm spent two years conducting writing workshops with girls in group homes and drug rehab centers.

There, Namm did the number one most important thing any adult can do for children and you: She listened to them.

Namm listened to the stories and experiences those “throwaway” children endured.

FINDING HOPE is for them and those like them, whose voices are almost never heard.

This event will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. at Malibu United Methodist Church, 30128 Morning View Drive, Malibu, CA 90265 Thursday, Sept. 12.

Teller of Stories That Matter, Diane Namm, Thursday in Malibu

Diane Namm is a storyteller in books, film, stage, and television. Her film credits include the award-winning shorts THE SACRIFICE, TELEMAFIA and GREAT AMERICAN PIGEON RACE.

Namm’s “docu-dramedy” WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE DINGLE opened the 2011 Dingle International Film Festival in Dingle, Ireland.

Namm’s other documentaries, SASA and the LADY COX STORY, are screened worldwide. Namm is also a playwright and director for stage. Her productions have included JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, 12 ANGRY JURORS, MONSTER, and others.

This artist doesn’t only write and direct for films and stage. Namm is also the author of over 65 books for children and young adults.

Telling stories “that matter” is what matters to Namm. FINDING HOPE is one such story.

I don’t do this type of announcement very often, but dang – 1-3 million children living on the streets in the US? What a sad reflection on our society and human rights record. Well Done Dianne! All the best with this important film.

What a remarkable person. If only those who devote their efforts to promoting hate and destruction would follow her example, this would be a much better world.
