(Before It's News)

As Americans go to the polls today, voters in eight states will get the opportunity to vote on whether to legalise marijuana use.

Five states are holding a vote on whether to legalise recreational use of cannabis while three others could join the 25 states (plus the District of Columbia) where medicinal cannabis is already legal.

Ahead of the votes, the North American Marijuana Index has risen 95 points since the beginning of September to 163 at last night’s close.

A number of quoted companies now produce marijuana legally, while there is even a company, IAnthus Capital Holdings (CNSX:IAN), that finances cannabis growers and provides expert management advice and advisory services.

The brakes on the expansion of use of cannabis appear to have been released with the 2013 Cole Memorandum, containing US Department of Justice guidance announcing that the federal government would no longer prioritize the prosecution of individuals and businesses that are in compliance with state laws that have legalized marijuana use, either for medical use or recreational use.
