(Before It's News)

Let’s face it. Life is expensive. When you’re young and still figuring out your career path, it feels like everything is more than you can afford. Even something as simple as looking after your teeth feels like a drain on what little funds you have. However, there are some ways that you can afford a healthy mouth without having to save up to buy the most expensive products:

Ditch the mouthwash

Mouthwash can be good for your gums, but getting the big brands is costly, especially if you use it as frequently as they recommend on the bottle. That is to say, you shouldn’t opt for a cheaper brand just to save money. Unless you’ve read the ingredients carefully and understand what they’ll do to your mouth, you can’t be absolutely sure that you’re buying a quality product. Instead, if you want to save money, you could make your own mouthwash. Saltwater is especially effective as an antiseptic if you’ve got an ulcer or sore gums. But, if you want something for daily use, the main ingredients you’ll need are water and essential oil. Mix a couple of drops of the oil with some filtered water and keep it in a bottle to use after you’ve brushed your teeth. If you’re looking to freshen your breath you can also add ingredients like peppermint oil or cinnamon powder. There are tons of DIY recipes online if you know where to look, and the ingredients will keep for months, so you’ll be saving a lot of money.

Change your diet

One way to avoid an expensive emergency trip to the dentist is to start eating a healthier diet. Our teeth and gums, like the rest of our body, benefit from the right types of food. As we all know, sugar is notoriously bad for our teeth, so minimising your intake of sugar and opting for sugar-free alternatives will realty improve the state of your teeth and make them last longer. Fresh fruit and vegetables can prevent gum disease and eating juicy, raw fruits and vegetables can cleanse your mouth and remove lingering food and prevent infections and morning breath. Finally, avoid eating especially acidic foods too often, like processed meats and fried foods, and limit your alcohol intake. Acidic foods can wear down at the enamel of your teeth and make them more sensitive and susceptible to staining.

Invest in a toothbrush that’s going to last and do you good

If you’re still using a manual toothbrush then now is the right time to move on. Electric toothbrushes do a much more thorough job at cleaning your mouth, evenly distributing toothpaste to clean the entire surface of each tooth and cleaning around the gum line. The right electric toothbrush will not only massive improve the health of your teeth and gums; it will last you for years. As long as you charge it and take care of it, it might even cost you less than a manual toothbrush. While using a manual toothbrush, a lot of people have the habit of biting down on it, which can quickly wear down the brush. On the other hand, the way that you use an electric toothbrush makes you less able to bite down on or chew it comfortably, which means that the head of an electric toothbrush will last a lot longer than a manual toothbrush.
