Noise And Restaurants

A bit of a gripe.

Why are the new restaurants so noisy these days?  We went out with some friends last night and it was a gymnasium.  Lots of hard surfaces.  Cement floor, table, walls.  The noise echoed so bad you couldn’t hear the person across the table from you.  On consecutive weekends I have been to a couple of different places and it was simply hard to hold a conversation.

I understand from the owner’s perspective.  Hard surfaces are easier to clean.  That makes their life easier. I want their life to be easy because they have a lot of things they are jostling and a lot of health regulations to worry about.  But hard surfaces are murder on diners.

Put some soft surfaces like wall hangings on the wall.  Maybe get some canvas painted by local artists and hang it on the wall.  Put some architectural baffles on the ceiling.

I think I am going to have to just confine my dining to old school places.  They are quieter.
