Small-Cap Snapshot: Vitamin Shoppe gets a boost from heavy-duty 2Q earnings showing healthy online sales

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE:VSI) got a boost Wednesday after it reported second-quarter earnings that crushed Wall Street estimates producing a surprise profit. For the quarter ended in June, the nutritional supplement retailer posted earnings of US$0.31 per share on revenue of US$293.1mln. Analysts who had modeled a loss of US$0.05 per share on revenue of US$279.9mln were pleasantly surprised. Revenue fell 3.8% compared to the same quarter a year ago. Vitamin Shoppe’s online sales increased 37%, however its same-store sales fell 1.1% contributing to its overall sales decline.

Shares of the Secaucus, New Jersey, specialty retailer jumped 29% to US$10.45.

Shares in 3D Systems Corp (NYSE:DDD) shot up in premarket trade after the pioneer in three-dimensional printing posted second-quarter results that beat Wall Street expectations on profit and revenue. For the quarter ended June 2018, the South Carolina-based company posted earnings of US$0.06 per share on revenue of US$$176.6mln. The results topped Wall Street expectations for earnings of US$0.01 per share on revenue of US$165.8mln. Revenue grew 3.9% on a year-over-year basis.

Shares of 3D Systems jumped 32.7% to US$18.02 midday.

Ampio Pharmaceuticals Inc (NYSEAMERICAN:AMPE) shares endured a rough run after the biopharma group announced that the US Food and Drug Administration will not provide a biologics license application (BLA) for Ampion, its treatment for pain caused by osteoarthritis of the knee. The FDA has recommended that Ampio pursue an additional randomized trial to measure the effectiveness of Ampion.

The news disappointed investors, who pushed Ampio shares down below the key US$1 threshold as they fell 73% to US$0.76 in afternoon trade.

Extreme Networks (NASDAQ:EXTR) saw its shares plunge after missing Wall Street’s second-quarter revenue estimate but beating its earnings forecast after a slowdown in its data center business. The maker of network infrastructure equipment reported adjusted net income of US$24mln, or US$0.20 per share, while revenue swung to US$278.3mln. Wall Street had expected Extreme to earn US$0.19 on revenue of US$279.22mln. The results failed to please investors who sent Extreme shares spiraling downward by 31% to US$6.18.
