Don’t Sleep: The Urgent Messages of Oliver Munday is an in-depth look at the crucial and incredibly arresting work of a powerhouse in graphic design and visual art. Munday’s work has been featured in the New York Times, The New Yorker, and Time Magazine. He is also an accomplished designer of remarkable book covers. Fresh out from the good people at Rizzoli New York, the impressive monograph showcases Munday’s prowess for powerful, progressive, hard-hitting, and socially-conscious a/k/a “woke” graphic work. There is something of an economy built into his style which I find appealing too – Munday rarely relies on type to hammer home his strong messages. The chapters are divided into sections for Criminal Justice, Race, Democracy, Education, Heritage, History, Economy, Health, Foreign Policy, and War; all topics which seem to be at the forefront of world news and raging political debates these days. The topics he’s chosen to group his work into also reveal something of a social activist bent. So besides appreciating his graphic style, I think we share some progressive social & political values too. There is a strong sense of a distrust of authority running throughout this lovely book, which really speaks to my own contrarian and anti-authoritarian streaks.
