School is finally here, everyone! For some parents, this means sending kids off to school, perhaps for the very first time. (I feel your pain!) For others, this may mean taking part a homeschool program. 

In my home, we do both. My teenager goes to our local High School, but my daughter just started Kindergarten, and is enrolled in the K12 Homeschool program. 

We decided to try homeschooling for Sophie because she is way beyond typical Kindergarten skills, and we wanted a more individualized education for her so she remains challenged. A couple of weeks ago when we attended the initial Kindergarten assessments, it was decided that Sophie will skip much of her Kindergarten curriculum. So I guess for all intents and purposes, she is a First Grader already! Well, sort of. 

Since we are homeschooling, getting out and about is super-important. We want to make sure Sophie not only gets loads of hands-on learning experiences, but socialization with other kids, too. This means trips to our local museums, state and local parks, and of course, the Akron Zoo! 

We took our first official field trip to the Akron Zoo yesterday. We have a membership, so this will likely become a regular outing for our family. In addition to some books about animals, we also packed a healthy lunch using our new Rubbermaid LunchBlox Kids’ Lunch Kit!

We also made some fun, Almond Butter and Peach Preserve “Sushi Rolls” as a main course. These are SO easy, and the kids absolutely love them. Just take a piece of sandwich bread and flatten it with a rolling pin or cup. Then spread a thin layer of both nut butter and jam on the bread. Carefully cut it into thin strips, and roll up into mock Sushi rolls. Easy, peasy! 

We had a great time checking out all of the great exhibits at the Akron Zoo. We learned about lions and tigers and bears, (Oh my!) and we also got to explore local Ohio bird species. 

All of that learning definitely worked up quite the appetite, so we headed to one of the zoo’s many picnic areas and sat down to enjoy our meal. The kids happily gobbled up their Sushi Rolls, fruits, and veggies.
