523 W. 37th Street, NY, NY 10018

In This, My Garden, Has Been to Me, Dennis Santella has created an elegiac document of formal and improvised greenspace in Harlem during a period of rapid change in the neighborhood.

The author: “I spent four years, from 2008-2012, mapping and photographing nearly 200 gardens, former gardens, and empty lots within the historic boundaries of Harlem.”

Author’s bio:

I have a rich background of studies in the sciences and fine arts, having completed a BA in Neuroscience and Behavior, an MPH in Environmental Health Science, and an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. These diverse disciplines inform my teaching and photographic practice. In addition to this academic background, craftsmanship has always been an important part of my life and continues to be an important part of my creative work. I was born in New York City and grew up just across the Hudson River in Teaneck, New Jersey. I currently live in Brooklyn and teach at several colleges in the tri-state area.
