The land for the gardens was donated by George Urlin, one of the early developers of Grandview.

In the 1930s, Urlin, whose home sat on the hill where Summit Chase now rises, donated the property across the street from his estate — running from Grandview Avenue west to Urlin and bordered by Goodale Boulevard on the north and the railroad tracks on the south — for use as recreational and green space.

The property donated by Urlin is the site for the gardens as well as McKinley Field and the tennis courts.

The city named the gardens in 1983 after Jim Wallace, who served as city treasurer from 1971-78.
